Uncertainty in Reconstructing Paleo‐Elevation of the Antarctic Ice Sheet From Temperature‐Sensitive Ice Core Records

Abstract Paleotemperature reconstructions from ice cores are mixed signals of changes in climate and ice‐surface elevation. A common, temperature‐based paleoaltimetry method suggests these can be disentangled by comparing two proxy locations with similar climates. The difference between the records is assumed to due elevation, which estimated scaling temperature a lapse rate. We investigate uncertainty associated this approach using case study Antarctic Ice Sheet during Last Glacial Maximum. From an ensemble simulations, we extract modeled temperatures at real cores. find on order hundreds meters that results spatial heterogeneity non‐adiabatic change, itself stems part elevation‐induced atmospheric circulation change. Our findings suggest caution needed when interpreting for sheets.
